I personally have decided to play realistically, on my return to the game following a year off. This meant editing almost all my stations to be realistic, which was a challenge but enjoyable using fleet lists and such. This also meant retro-fitting things like EOD, railway policing, cell vans , midwives + urgent care etc etc into my set-up. But with railway firefighting, I've found my self stomped, with no actual clue about the "Rail Road Unit", I've tried researching, but to no avail, and in game descriptions are unhelpful "Serves the purpose of a Road Rail Unit" I assumed this might be the sort of thing KFRS has at their "channel tunnel" fire station - however this was closed at end of 2024.
So is this done by even ran by fire services, or other agencies such as Network Rail? If so what type of facilities are they based out of? What is their role, and does anyone have photos/pictures of them!
Many thanks in advance ![]()
Rail Road Units: What are they?

The only thing that I can find that is comparable to a RRU is Transport for London's ERU which does get mobilised to rail incidents.

I am aware Avon FRS, South Wales FRS and possibly Merseyside FRS all have dedicated units. Network rail also has various units which are not blue light but still respond to serious incidents on the rail network. They carry specialist equipment and can literally ride the rail tracks to the scene as well as drive along the road. -

See :
PostRE: Railway Fire
How many Fire Stations?
How many Fire Stations with Railway extension?
How many Ambulance Stations?
How many Police Stations?
The ratio of Fire Railway missions is about 5% of those with active Railway extension
If you have have 100 Fire Stations, one of which has Railway extension, this generates one for every 2000 missions
A solution to increase this is to build some Railway Fire Stations that are solely for Railway Fire
This is more realistic, Network Rail MDU, although there are not that many

In this building place the RRU and trained staff only
The Fire vehicles can then be moved to Fire Stations -

Pretty much what I've done
Made a few network rail bases and used the custom role names to create engineering teams.
