Radio Reference Wiki. For the counties I'm working on it lists every apparatus in every station for every department. Locally I also have 10-75.net thats populated for my home county but hit or miss elsewhere.
I Google the departments I am building City Websites, Facebook pages, I have a couple Maps for states I have created myself. 11 states to be exact.
Yup. Usually for larger counties wikipedia have lists of station numbers locations and even what engines and units are in each station. Another way is to go to your county's fire department website, sometimes they have station locations and units listed. I would do ANY research over using google to find fire stations but if I have to I have to. You can find your stations that way but it won't necessarily give you the unit numbers either. If you are going to use google maps also use different words to find all of the fire stations, "fire station, fire department, fire, [county name] fire, etc."
The website you have Fire Wiki is also pretty good as it shows you all the fire stations in the U.S. the other websites you can find unit numbers which helps a lot.
If you want to know about police too, they don't give you sites to see what kind of units they have so you will just have to guess. Sometimes they do however but it's pretty rare.
When deciding WHERE I want to place a station, I use Google maps to look up the locations of stations in the area I want to build. Then I use the street view setting and the satellite view to see approximately what vehicles those stations have. It's not perfect but it's close. I do also click on the station and look through as much of the user submitted pics as I can. Those will often show what's available. It's not perfect but it's as close as you can get sometimes.
I google station names, image search to find callsigns and then put it all in my AAR.
Call signs like I tell my members you do what you can remember and what makes it easiest for you it's your set up.
Some cities I have all the units of the station the same number. Like chicago battalion 110 or something like that. Others I kept it real.
Same with pd. I kept my of simple. Lakeville PD-1, Lakeville K9-1, Lakeville Swat or bearcat 1. Easy for me.
Thank you everyone, all the stuff you have said is really useful.
