Firefighters on ladder trucks

  • I wonder why the number of firefighters on a ladder truck is limited to 3 in the game as it normally is in Germany.I always thought a ladder company at least has a crew of 4 up to 6 firemen.Maybe one of the US-Fireman could explain it to me?

Having 4 ff's on a ladder truck is actually normal in the states. There are some departments (very few) that only require 3 but they are rare. It is also rare for there to be more than 4 unless they have a probie. Most fire departments in the U.S. have 1 driver/operator, 1 Officer and 2 FF's on their trucks. This is the same for pumpers and most heavy rescue trucks.

This info is based on large career departments like Houston, Dallas and San Antonio

  • Here in the Midwest it isn't uncommon to have only 2 on any given truck, there are some departments who only run a driver full time. Although most departments have moved staffing up to a minimum of 3 on the engines/pumpers. There Are a lot of rural areas here with no volunteers anymore. The Metro area around me used to be staffed this way 5 Man Engine Crew, 6 Man Ladder/Truck/Tiller Crew, they since went down to 4 Man engines, and 5 man trucks due to budget and staffing issues. There is a large department in here who runs only 3 Man engines, and two man ladders, but they also run two man rescues who become part of the ladder company in case of working fire.
