Satellite

  • Spoken to Sebastian. Essentially his reply is that there is no public, free for commercial use, satellite layer for OSM, as mentioned above.

    The iOS app uses Apple Maps and, developing an application for iOS you get quite free access to it. However, it's not available beyond use within the app. So can't be used on a PC browser.

    Google Maps is being lined up for the Android App. Google offer two plans for commercial use of Google Maps (ie where profit can be made from it), one where it is being used on an app on the Play store or the second plan, a Premium plan, when it's used elsewhere (eg web browser). The costs aren't specifically defined but the jump between the two I understand to be quite great.

    I'm aware on Leitstellenspiel someone has made a browser script to enable such feature, however this isn't endorsed by MissionChief or SHPlay, thus does not hold us liable if Google consider it a breach of their terms (in that it doesn't use our API account). It's not clear if it would as that person makes no profit from that browser modification. Of course if we add it to MissionChief in that manner, that changes.

    Understandably from a technical point of view, it's easily possible. But from a legal point of view and in eyes of what needs there are for the business in terms of cost.. not possible.

    By all means if you are aware of a less obvious service that provide a free satellite layer for OSM that we aren't aware of then let us know.

  • The use of Bing maps is very limited with OSM. The agreement being;

    In November 2010 it was announced that Bing has granted the right to trace from their aerial imagery for the purpose of contributing content to OpenStreetMap. Please note the only legal use of Bing maps is to use the aerial imagery layer as background to do your own OSM drawing (also known as "tracing"). It is not legal to use any other information from Bing maps (like street names, street view etc.).

    In other words other than drawing roads over satellite imagery for the purpose of making the OSM map data, Bing maps can't be used.

    Fair enough, thanks for looking into it
