I just name mine. by City name and PD-1 PD-2, PD-3......
S = Sherriff or supervisor. so S-1, S-2, S-3.
K9-1
Swat-1
Bearcat-1
Each city near me in real life has a city identifier. for instance One city is 3300. and they have 5 districts or beats. the last 2 #s are the shift and the beat.
3312. Would be 33=City, 1=Beat/Zone, and 2 would be working 2nd shift.

I believe each department will number them differently.
I don't believe there is a national standard. I would look up which department your building and follow them. Alternatively, you can use one of the bigger police departments as an example if you are building non-realistic.
Cheers,
Thank you for the tips so far
Like others have stated there is no standard to call sign/car numbers. Each agency is going to designate their call sign/car numbers differently. If you give me the agency I can assist you with this. I am very knowledgeable on major LE agencies in the US.

I am currently in Bakersfield, San Francisco, and San Diego.
it varies from agency to agency with letters and number combo's or just numbers, when I was with L.A. County the first number indicates your station identifier and the letter is what type of unit last number is your unit number, for instance 16K52, 16 is Carson station, K is 1 man car and 52 is the unit #52 from that station. And up north another county department in WA state uses 3 digit numbers.
