I was under the impression that the air tankers counted towards you tankers called for in wildfires. Mine are not. Has it always been this way or is it something new?

actually it should stay as it is, the regular ground tankers are supporting the water flow to the engines/pumps. the air tankers are dropping water/fire retardant either directly on the fire or just in front , they cant effectively, directly support water flow.

Honestly, it was like a lightbulb came on... Then I remembered this story about an air tanker landing on a logging road to refill a tanker truck.

That's why most place have gone to referring to water trucks as Tenders to differentiate them
